Leading float glass, automotive and architectural glass, and photovoltaic glass product manufacturer Xinyi Glass Holdings Co., Ltd. (“Xinyi Glass†or “Groupâ€) will set up the world’s first R&D center specializing in glass energy-saving technologies in Hong Kong.
The center will focus on the development of solar energy-related new generation energy conversion products and transparent conductive glass for solar thin film batteries. In addition, the center will also develop high-performance LOW-E energy-saving glass for building, energy-saving and heat-insulating automobile glass products and other advanced environmental protection and energy-saving glass products.

In recent years, the solar photovoltaic power generation industry has developed rapidly. From 2000 to 2008, the global annual growth rate of solar cell production was 47%, and the output in 2008 reached 6.4GW. In 2008, the output of photovoltaic cells in China reached 2 GW, maintaining its position as the world's largest.
As solar energy will be one of the mainstreams for the development of new energy in the future, and as a necessary transparent glass protective layer for solar panels, the demand for ultra-white photovoltaic glass will continue to grow following the development of the solar energy industry. The Group's first 300-ton per day ultra-white PV glass production line was put into production in January 2008, while the second planned production line with a daily capacity of 500 tons will begin trial production at the end of next month.
Besides the application of solar energy, the market demand for other environmentally-friendly and energy-saving glass is also huge, and the Group has also been struggling to grasp market opportunities. The glass contract for the 2010 China World Expo 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the main venue for the 2011 World University Games was successfully achieved. The glass and building materials needed are also based on environmental protection and energy conservation. The Group's exclusive LOW-E energy-saving glass for the China Pavilion of the World Expo was delivered at the beginning of the month.
