On July 22, Tosoh (Guangzhou) Chemical Co., Ltd. held the groundbreaking ceremony for the PVC project in Nansha Economic Development Zone, Guangzhou. This project is the first PVC production project in Japan that is solely funded by China. The annual output of PVC is 220,000 tons and the total investment is 75 million US dollars. It is expected to be completed and put into operation in December 2006.
Tosoh (Guangzhou) Corporation is composed of four Japanese listed companies. Tosoh Co., Ltd., which has a 67% investment, is a large-scale integrated petrochemical company in Japan. Its PVC production ranks first in Japan, and it has an annual production capacity of 1.08 million tons of vinyl chloride monomer in Japan. It will complete the year in November 2005. Production of 400,000 tons of vinyl chloride monomer will be increased. The annual production of vinyl chloride will reach 1.48 million tons. This is the leader in Asia's vinyl chloride monomer industry, and the production capacity of PVC resin ranks among the top in Asia. Other investors are Japan's three largest trading companies - Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Marubeni Corporation.
The company's raw materials for the production of PVC resins are all supplied by Tosoh from Japan to ensure its market competitiveness. Dongcao (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. official said in an exclusive interview with this reporter that the reason why they built a factory in Nansha, Guangzhou was because of the Nansha plant as the center, covering all of their original customers within a radius of 100 kilometers. Therefore, all products will be sold to the Chinese market, with a focus on Guangdong Province and the surrounding areas.
It is understood that China has become the second largest consumer of PVC in the world, and nearly one-third of the domestic supply of PVC is dependent on imports. The annual demand for PVC in Guangdong Province is approximately 1.8 million tons, accounting for 26% of the national market. However, there was no PVC manufacturer in Guangzhou before that.
