After the International Organization for Standardization ISO established ISO 3780 "Road Vehicles - World Manufacturer Identification Code" in 1976, major automobile manufacturers have established their own standards and established a worldwide vehicle identification system.

In 1996, China completed the approval of vehicle identification codes and issued four important standards: GB/T16735, GB/T16736, GB/T16737, and GB/T16738. These four standards are equivalent to the ISO standard.

In 1998, the Ministry of Machinery Industry issued regulations on the use of VIN, making it a mandatory standard for the automotive industry on October 1. This has made China an extremely important first step in establishing a universal vehicle identification system.

Vehicle identification number VIN consists of three parts, namely WMI, VDS, VIS.

"WMI" is the world manufacturer's identification code and it has the world's uniqueness in the world of vehicle manufacturing plants. The ISO organization authorizes SAE of the American Society of Automotive Engineers as its international agency and is responsible for assigning regional codes and country codes to countries around the world. It is responsible for the preservation and verification of WMI. The Auto Industry Management Office of China's Machinery Bureau has been authorized to manage the vehicle identification codes within China (including the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions) and is responsible for the allocation of WMI codes.

VIS is the index part of the vehicle's delivery characteristics.

The VIN code consists of 17 digits and letters. Each digit or letter has a different meaning.
