Guangdong special development project of atmospheric neutron irradiation spectrometer experimental platform for scientific and technological development

Chen Hesheng, an academician of the spallation neutron source engineering and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that the new neutron spectrometer, the first new user spectrometer to be launched as the Chinese spallation neutron source, will be the new type of electronic device and the electronic system's atmospheric neutron radiation. The lighting effect provides an excellent experiment and test platform to give full play to the spallation neutron source. Wang Yunhui, deputy director of the Fifth Institute of Electronic and Information Technology of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and Chen Yanwei, director of the Dongguan Center for Science and Technology, respectively addressed the speech and expressed their full support for the construction of the project.
The project technical expert group carefully listened to the report of the project team on the physical design of the spectrometer. After questioning and discussion, it was held that the physical design of the atmospheric neutron irradiation spectrometer is scientific and reasonable, and the technical approach is feasible. The expert group unanimously agreed to pass the review and carry out follow-up engineering design.
The atmospheric neutrons produced by the cosmic ray in the earth's atmosphere through the spallation reaction are distributed on the ground and in the atmosphere. Atmospheric neutrons can cause single-effects and other radiation effects of electronic devices, causing device data errors, functional failures, and even burnout. The reduction in size and the increase in integration density have a serious impact on the application of ground-based high-reliability applications, aerospace and near-space applications for electronic devices/systems. Chinese spallation neutrons originated in 2012 and have designed and built atmospheric neutron extraction channels.
Atmospheric neutron irradiation spectrometer will be the only electronic device/system acceleration test platform with atmospheric neutron spectrum characteristics covering meV to GeV energy segments. Physical design indicators such as “10MeV neutron flux” have reached international advanced level. It will provide important technical support for atmospheric neutron irradiation effects for the autonomous and controllable development of China's electronic information industry and promote the development of related technology industries.
