Korea Develops New Battery Materials for Electric Vehicles

According to the website of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Korea Academy of Science and Technology released a news report that the university, together with Seoul University, used lithium-manganese-nickel-cobalt-manganese-oxide (LMR) materials to create a new type of anode material that could overcome the surface heating phenomenon. This technology can improve the performance of electric vehicle batteries. The research results were published in the international academic magazine Nano Letters.

LMR materials have higher energy density and safety than other anode materials, but the crystal structure will appear unstable when charging and discharging. This phenomenon mainly occurs on the surface of anode material particles, and it has limitations in commercial applications. The Korean technology keeps the surface of the LMR anode material stable, which in turn forms a surface structure that rapidly conveys lithium ions, suppresses the phenomenon of material heating, and is simple and easy to fabricate.

The results show that the new material maintains its original characteristics when it is subjected to high-speed charge and discharge over 300 times in 2 minutes. This technology can shorten the charging time and increase the distance traveled. At the same time, the anode material synthesis method and improvement scheme can be applied to the next generation of electric vehicles and medium and large-scale energy storage systems.
