Liberation engine Eberhich’s new auxiliary power unit is about to debut in Germany

Commercial vehicles need a steady stream of power, both in driving and braking. At the 2014 Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover, Germany, Eberspächer Automotive AG will present an APU. It can effectively convert diesel into electricity to power truck components.

This auxiliary power unit is a complete and independent power system that is separate from the engine. This kind of auxiliary power device is generally used in spacecrafts, and Ebenberg first introduced this system into the field of commercial vehicles. This will completely reform the truck's traditional power management system and reduce the generator's power load to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. "Our power-assisted power unit not only solves the energy problem, but we are also pursuing a brand new truck-mounted power system that can both maintain the balance of the environment and increase the efficiency of work," said Dr. Klaus Beetz, Operations Manager at Eberspächer.

Without losing mechanical power, this innovative APU can convert diesel fuel in the tank into electricity in an energy-efficient manner and achieve zero emissions. The emissions of nitric oxide, carbon monoxide and soot particles are reduced by 90% compared to the self-generation of diesel engines. The APU also sets up power control and will produce electricity according to actual needs. The APU's maximum output power is 3 kilowatts and its effective power can reach 40%. Such efficient power supply can meet both short-distance and long-distance transportation.

When the truck is started, the electric auxiliary power system also starts to provide power to the vehicle, which will effectively relieve the generator's power load. If you use a diesel engine to generate electricity, you will need nearly twice as much fuel to power the vehicle. The longer the system is operating, the more power it saves and will greatly improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of the vehicle. Reducing emissions is an important challenge in the transportation sector. With this auxiliary power unit, future trucks will be stimulated to save energy.

In simple terms, this APU is a high-temperature fuel cell that can produce electricity. Its operating principle is that diesel and air are mixed, and then this mixed gas is converted into combustible gas through a catalytic converter. The fuel gas produced by this process contains hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Finally, the combustible gas is converted into electricity output by a preheated reformer. Both the preheating technology of the fuel and the catalytic exhaust system required for this process are the core technologies of the Ebenberg Group.

In the future, commercial vehicle electrification is an important way to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. This power APU will play an important role in the future fuel-saving strategy. Many of the truck's more energy-intensive parts systems were previously powered by engines such as cooling water, hydraulic pumps, or air compression systems. In the future, the power of these systems can be supplied directly by the power APU. Even an engine-powered air conditioning system can provide power operation from this power assist system that is independent of the engine. This allows the engine to focus on vehicle propulsion, thereby reducing fuel consumption. The conversion of mechanical drives to electric drives will also bring about tremendous changes in the layout of truck load-bearing. At the same time, because the battery is in an ideal state of charge, the life of the battery will be longer and the durability of the truck will be longer.

Dr. Beetz said, “At this stage we have not yet finalized the development of this technology, but we are working together with a well-known commercial vehicle manufacturer to improve this technology. During this year, we will conduct a lot of practical tests and It is planned to first market this APU in the North American market by the end of 2017."
