Instrumentation is the source of information and is an important tool for humans to acquire knowledge of the natural world and understand the world. Instrumentation has gone through four stages so far.
As the basic structure of the information society, the information superhighway has established its status as a bridge and link in the logical relationship between man and nature. Test equipment is located in the ring domain between the information superhighway and nature, and is an important source of information in the information superhighway.
Throughout the development of instrument technology, the main stages it has experienced are: analog instruments, digital instruments, smart instruments and virtual instruments.
First, analog instruments: Before the 1950s, the electrical measurement technology was mainly analog measurement. The basic structure of this type of instrument is electromagnetic mechanical type, and the measurement results are mainly displayed by means of hands.
Second, digital instruments: In the 1950s, the introduction of digital technology and the emergence of integrated circuits enabled electrical instruments to evolve from analog to digital.
It is characterized by converting analog signal measurements into digital signal measurements and digitally outputting the final results for fast response and higher accuracy measurements. Such instruments are currently quite popular, such as digital voltmeters, digital frequency meters, and the like.
Third, smart instruments: appeared in the 1970s, is a combination of modern testing technology and computer technology. It is a test instrument that contains a microcomputer or a microprocessor. The measurement results have functions such as storage, calculation, logic judgment, automatic operation, and automatic control. That is, it has a certain intelligence function, so it is called "intelligent instrument."
The intelligent instrument changes the functions such as control links, data acquisition and processing, self-zeroing, self-calibration, and auto-ranging in traditional digital instruments to the microprocessor, thereby improving the measurement accuracy and speed.
Fourth, virtual instruments: This concept was proposed as early as the 1970s, but the real realization was possible after the emergence of bus standards such as PCI, GPIB, VXI, and PXI, and with card instruments and VXI. The introduction of bus instruments, PXI bus instruments, etc. has been rapidly developed.
The virtual instrument is an instrument with a visual interface built on the basis of a computer by adding related hardware and software.
Virtual instruments are the result of perfect combination of modern computer technology and instrument technology. Software plays a vital role in the development and use of the instrument. It can be said that there is no virtual instrument without software. It is based on the idea that "software is the instrument", uses the latest computer technology to realize and extend the functions of traditional instruments, and truly realizes the user's own design and definition of instruments that meet their own special requirements.
So far, the scope of application of instrumentation has been very extensive, and is being further applied to biomedical and biological engineering from traditional application fields such as chemical composition analysis, physical quantity detection, mechanical quantity measurement, astronomical geography observation, industrial production process automatic control, and product quality measurement and control. Non-traditional applications such as eco-environment have expanded. At the same time, with the development of high-tech and industry such as polymer chemistry, molecular biology, life sciences, clinical medicine, pharmacy, materials science, and environmental monitoring and control in the new century, the application fields of instrumentation will also be more rapid. expand. With the advancement of modern science and technology, the application fields of instrumentation have become more and more extensive and deeper. All this has undoubtedly provided a strong impetus for the further development of instrumentation and demonstrated a bright future.
