A new chemical sensor prototype is reported to detect "fingerprints" of chemicals and other substances 100 feet away, and developers are working hard to downsize them to shoebox sizes.
The device is expected to identify traces of drugs and explosives and speed up the analysis of certain medical samples. This portable infrared chemical sensor can be mounted on a drone or carried around with users such as doctors, police, border guards and soldiers.
The device's sensors are based on a new type of fiber laser that combines high power with a laser beam that covers a wide range of infrared frequencies (from 1.6 to 12 microns covering the mid-wave and long-wave infrared bands).

Islam and his team at the University of Michigan's associate professor of electronics and computer science and biomedical engineering created the device using off-the-shelf fiber and telecommunications components, eliminating the need for custom optics.
