Principle: The low-pressure mercury lamp emits a 253.7 nm line, irradiates the mercury vapor generated in the sample to be measured, mercury atoms fluoresce in the fire, and is converted into an electric signal by a photomultiplier tube. After amplification, A/D conversion, the data is generated by the single-chip microcomputer. Processing, LED display, print out test results.

The instrument uses excess stannous chloride to fully react with mercury chloride in the sample. The reaction formula is as follows:

The generated mercury vapor is ejected from the atom nozzle by the carrier gas, and is irradiated by the excitation light with a wavelength of 253.7 nm emitted from the low mercury lamp. The ground state mercury atoms are excited to a high energy state and radiate resonance when returning to the ground state. Fluorescence, this fluorescence is focused on a photomultiplier tube by a condenser lens, photoelectric conversion is achieved, the photocurrent is amplified (recordable peaks can be recorded by a recorder), A/D conversion is performed by the computer, and the calculation result can be printed.

When the concentration of mercury is very low, the fluorescence intensity is in a good linear relationship with the concentration of mercury and can be used for the quantitative determination of trace amounts of mercury.

It should be pointed out that the excited mercury atom emits fluorescence instead of spontaneously returning to the ground state, and it also collides with the background particle and converts the energy into thermal motion of the particle, resulting in a transition without fluorescence radiation and a decrease in fluorescence intensity. This is the phenomenon of atomic fluorescence quenching. Since the chance of collision of excited mercury atoms with argon is much smaller than that of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide in the air, the fluorescence quenching caused is much smaller. Therefore, when using argon as the gas source, the sensitivity of the instrument is higher than that of nitrogen. Much more.
