The day of the dialogue with Li Dakai coincided with the fact that the Fast Group’s 1 millionth double-shaft heavy-duty transmission was off the assembly line. In simple and warm celebrations, I saw the singing of big red silk fabrics and the performance of drums with eight drums. It is said that this is the voluntary arrangement of the yangko dance team and the waist drum team of the retired faculty of the staff. Their love for the company is overwhelming.
It has long been heard that Fast employees still like to call Chairman Li Dakai “the directorâ€. It has been 12 years since he took office and the company has grown from weak to strong and has been developing the world's largest transmission manufacturer in the world.
Although I did not meet with Li Dakai for the first time, it was the first time I had a deep conversation. His understanding of his talents, strategic vision, and independent innovation has long been known to me. However, his deep sense of national responsibility, strong patriotism, the desire to develop the national industry, and the enthusiasm for the development of the industry have made me deeply aware. Shocked and moved.
“Independent innovation of the industry is related to the national interest†is the cultural soul of Fast.
Li Qingwen: Welcome to the “President Dialogue†section. Not long ago, we held a forum for industry representatives in parts and components. They generally reflected that the "President's Dialogue" focused on more vehicles and policies and focused on fewer parts and components.
In fact, "China Automotive News" has always attached importance to parts and components, and called for all sectors of the industry to pay attention to China's auto parts development from a higher level. We have already launched the "Selection of China's auto parts suppliers" activity.
The development of parts and components is a fundamental issue in the development of China's auto industry, and it is also a strategic issue. I believe that neglecting the protection of the parts and components industry during the negotiations on accession to the WTO and allowing wholly foreign-owned production of key assembly foreign companies is to abandon the core competitiveness.
Dakai Li: Indeed, many words and profits fall into the hands of others. Technology transfer fees and import costs for key components are huge. It is unfair that China only provides markets and cheap labor.
Li Qingwen: Some people think that in the past, the auto industry did not have a strategy, while others thought it was a strategy that was not clear or was not implemented properly. In your opinion, what responsibility should the government take when it comes to formulating strategies for parts and components?
Li Dakai: Many people may not realize that national industries involve national interests and national security. Last year, Secretary General Hu proposed building an innovative country, and everyone began to reflect more.
In peacetime, many things can be obtained through global procurement, but once international friction occurs or national security is threatened, we may not be able to obtain these things. This includes key components that are critical to the safety of important industries. If there is no independent research and development and production capacity, what should I do? From this perspective, ethnic enterprises must have a sense of urgency and can't just follow foreigners to make money.
The Indian government’s protection of national industries exceeds that of China, including joint venture conditions, import tariffs, and other aspects. Although India's industrial development is relatively slow, it is indeed steadily moving forward.
Li Qingwen: The relationship between industrial interests and national interests is very close. It is unrealistic to discuss industrial interests without national interests. In the past, some people had misunderstood the relationship between the two, such as "do not ask for everything, but seek the place", "as long as they can provide employment, tax revenue in China, even if the Chinese companies" and so on.
Li Dakai: I think that the idea of "not asking for everything but seeking accommodation" is feasible within the country but not between countries. For example, the United States has always said that "the interests of the country are supreme" and did not put the interests of all mankind in the first place. Therefore, we have established a culture of supremacy of the nation’s national interests within the company. This is the fundamental driving force for the pursuit of development. If corporate culture does not place national interests at the core, there is no soul.
Of course, I do not agree with the closure of the country. The advanced technology belongs to all human beings. We must not learn or use it because it is not our country. International companies are also integrating advanced technologies from various countries. Only by learning and absorbing can we catch up and surpass.
With the vision of the world for development
Cast a hundred years
Li Qingwen: Fast is now the world's No. 1 in production capacity. No matter the market share, independent development capability, or market adaptability, it is a leading company in the same industry in China. Now China is not the leading company in every subdivided component industry. Generally speaking, China's spare parts industry is relatively weak in terms of strategy, management, and profitability. Parts can't be done well, and China's auto industry is hard to make.
Dakai Li: I very much agree with your point of view. If you do not master key components and core technologies, it is impossible for the vehicle to catch up with foreign companies. The importance of spare parts was raised more than ten years ago, but the policy at that time did not determine the direction from a global perspective, but only concerned about whether or not they could survive at home.
Nowadays, our company's strength has been relatively strong. With the ability to meet the needs of the domestic market, we also have the desire to go to the international market. This requires that we not only meet the requirements of world-class OEMs in terms of quantity, but also performance, safety, and environmental protection. This gives us a real sense of urgency.
"Blood transfusion is not as good as hematopoiesis." First of all, the parts and components companies should be self-reliant; secondly, the OEMs must also encourage and boldly use the parts and components produced by the national enterprises.
Li Qingwen: In the past few years, the automobile industry was indeed lacking ambitions. In the industry, there was very little to hear the voice of “going out to achieve an internationalization strategy.†At that time, many people thought that after joining the WTO, the wolf had come. They focused their efforts on how to defend. Almost no offense was considered. Individuals did not even have the confidence to defend themselves.
Li Dakai: The most effective defense is offense. Multinational companies came to China and wanted to occupy more markets. Therefore, even if they operated at a loss-making stage, they would insist on it and insist on it. Can we rely on more than 20 years of development to prevent people from accumulating for hundreds of years? I think the best way is that we will also compete in their country, weakening their profits and cutting their backs.
Li Qingwen: Originally formulated industrial development strategy, lack of international ambition, the positioning of the development of parts and components industry is relatively low, did not put the future development goals on the internationalization, but not the ideal of building a strong auto parts country. How can a lack of lofty ideals have a clear strategy? How could it be stronger?
With the market share and scale of Fast in the domestic market, coupled with the good development momentum of China's heavy truck market in the next 10 years, even without automatic transmission, there is no problem in eating 10 years old. Why did Fast resolve to enter the field of automatic transmissions?
Li Dakai: You can eat old books in 10 years, but after 20 or 40 years? We must now consider the issue of creating a century-old enterprise. What I am most worried about now is the automatic transmission. China has not mastered this technology, and foreign countries have imposed a technical blockade on us. We must tackle the issue as soon as possible.
From the standpoint of short-term economic benefits for enterprises, automatic transmissions will not make money at all for 10 years. In 1985, American vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions were very poor in ride comfort, and in 1995 they were much smoother. In 2000, the products really entered the market, and this year's market share was only 20%. European automatic transmission research and development started simultaneously with the United States, but Europe Emphasis on environmental protection and human welfare, automatic transmission market share of 40%. Therefore, in the next 10 years, we have no illusions about the profitability of commercial vehicle automatic transmissions in the country. But after 15 and 20 years? China cannot develop without progress. Chinese people also need to enjoy environmental protection and a relaxed working environment. When does this happen, should we still be subject to foreign companies? Absolutely not. In addition, our military vehicles must be equipped with automatic transmissions. From the perspective of national defense security, we must also independently develop automatic transmissions.
The year before last year, I went to a company in Hunan and I heard that their concrete pump trucks were using ZF AMT transmissions, and the purchase of one of them was worth more than 200,000 yuan. When I told this price to an executive of a multinational company, he did not believe that he said that ZF offered them a quotation for as long as 6,000 euros (equivalent to 670,000 yuan).
At the same time, the concrete pump trucks produced by this company are valued at more than 2 million yuan. When they did not produce this kind of car, the imported Germany's similar products would cost more than 6 million yuan. When they produced their own products, the German car price reduced to more than 300 million. It can be seen how profitful the imported high-tech products are! If we want to develop, if we want to stand up and make profits in the international market, we must master key technologies.
Grab heaven and earth and make it bigger and stronger
Li Qingwen: In order to achieve this goal, what advantage does Fast have?
Li Dakai: From a microscopic point of view, Fast has the basis of mechanical transmission, and can do better in terms of quality, environmental protection, etc., and can also better control costs. In addition, after the development of automatic transmissions, our competitiveness will be greatly enhanced. An American entrepreneur came to our factory and found that the employees of Fast had a heartfelt love for their company. He was filled with emotion. This is where our unique strength lies.
Li Qingwen: There is also a macro advantage that the Chinese economy will continue to develop rapidly in the future.
Li Dakai: Yes. Chinese enterprises have a unique environment for development. I went to the United States for the first time in the 1980s. I feel that the highways there are very developed and infrastructure construction is complete. But now, go there again and find that level. The changes in China over the years can be seen with each passing day, and will continue to develop in the future. Such a large environment provides good conditions for the development of our industry.
Li Qingwen: The development of the heavy-duty transmission industry is closely related to the development of heavy trucks. At present, the global demand for heavy trucks is about 1 million vehicles each year. Europe, the United States, and China each account for approximately 30% of the market. This structure is probably not stable and will change.
Li Dakai: Yes. The output and quantity of heavy trucks in China will continue to increase for a long time, and their share in the world market will also expand. On the one hand, it is because China is developing and there are vast areas to be developed. This provides opportunities for the development of heavy trucks. On the other hand, because the current conditions for using heavy trucks in China are still relatively poor, in some places a car must be scrapped after three years of use. This also constitutes a part of the demand for new cars.
"More serious" spirit
Is the key to becoming the world leader
Li Qingwen: If you want to be among the top three in the world, you must also see your own shortcomings. What do you think is the biggest constraint to Fastett's development now?
Li Dakai: There is a lack of "a little bit more serious" spirit, which is reflected in R & D, manufacturing, quality control and other aspects.
Li Qingwen: This view is very unique.
Li Dakai: Only a little more seriously, this problem is not only unique to Fawsi, but also exists in our suppliers. In 2004, we almost got a serious quality problem due to the negligence of one supplier. At the time, when I went to the workshop to check myself, I discovered this major problem. If these products flow into the market, they will immediately smash the brand.
Fast has punished many employees for his “not serious†problem, but punishment is not an end in order to carry out the concept of “taking a little more seriouslyâ€. If we can't take everything seriously, even if we have mastered the technology, problems will emerge in an endless stream.
Li Qingwen: It is to emphasize "execution, execution, and re-execution, fine, fine, and fine."
Li Dakai: R & D is also the case. If we only pay attention to load-bearing issues and do not pay attention to how to solve the noise problem, we still cannot enter the international market. To solve the noise problem, it is necessary to study the machining accuracy, heat treatment, bump prevention, tools, and so on. These seemingly minor issues require a lot of energy. Many of the gaps between China and foreign countries are due to the lack of a spirit of "taking a little more seriously."
Li Qingwen: Not only manufacturing, China lacks the spirit of “taking a little more seriously†in many aspects. Because this "a little bit" did not break through, the quality of the product was downgraded.
Li Dakai: Yes. Our country has market advantages and cost advantages. The Chinese are smart and hard-working. However, if they do not solve the “little†problem, these advantages will be greatly reduced. I have a "two-eight principle": Many of us use 80% of our energy to complete 80% of our work, and then we complacently think that we're done, and that the remaining 20% will be negligent. In fact, in order to solve the 20% of the work, 80% of the effort is required. Since the previous period solved the 80% problem with 20% energy, it was only 20% of the people's price. If 80% of the energy is used to solve the remaining 20%, will it not be 100%? Therefore, I call it "negative 28".
Li Qingwen: Poor "this little bit" is not a quantitative change but a qualitative change.
